The maternal role confidence scale with 14 items and the nursing educational needs with 33 items, were used as tools for the purpose of this study.
The study used questionnaire survey. The data were collected from March 1 to July 30, 2001. The survey was done face to face at the time of discharge.
Data collected were analysed by SAS Ver8.l program using frequency, mean, percentage, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, and pearson correlation coefficients.
The results of this study are summarized as follows:
1) The mean score of maternal role confidence was 2.65.
The range of scores for items were between 3.28 and 2.06. The item showing the highest score is ¡¯I have not much patience when I take care of my baby.¡¯(3.28) whereas, the lowest score is ¡¯I know that my baby wants most of the times.¡¯(2.16)
2) The mean score of nursing educational needs was 2.90.
The range of scores for items were between 3.43 and 2.35. The category showing the highest need is disorder management(3.28) whereas, the lowest need is feeding(2.68).
3) The level of maternal confidence showed statistically significant difference in age of mother, frequency of child, type of feeding, bodyweight at the time of discharge, and stay of hospital.
4) The level of nursing educational needs show statistically significant difference in bodyweight at the time of discharge.
5) There was a significantly negative correlation between the maternal role confidence and the nursing educational needs.
The lower the level of maternal role confidence, the higher the level of nursing educational needs.(r= -0.324, P= 0.001)
